Milford Sound Sightseeing Tour

"More than just a sightseeing tour, a visit to Milford is a World Heritage experience."

Visiting Milford Sound really is a sightseeing tour de force. The area has been popular with visitors since the area was first opened up with the discovery of the Mackinnon Pass in 1888 – nowadays over half a million visitors to New Zealand include Milford Sound in their touring itineraries.

  • Sights Worth Filming – Up until the 20 th century, Fiordland was one of the least explored areas of New Zealand due to its inclement weather conditions and heavy, often impassable rainforests and terrain. Nearby Milford locations were to prove perfect for filming in Peter Jackson's blockbuster Lord of the Rings trilogy, doubling up for the wild landscapes of Argonath.
  • The Milford Track – The 53.5km long Milford Track (sometimes dubbed 'The Finest Walk in The World' ) was opened up at the end of the 19th century, in part following Maori trails used for gathering pounamu (greenstone). The track can be walked independently or as part of a guided walk. Either way it takes 4 days, so if you don't have time to tramp (or hike), a sightseeing tour by air, coach or cruise is an excellent way to see the area.
