Milford Sound is one of the most photographed and most-visited areas of New Zealand’s South Island. Its musical-sounding Maori name is Piopiotahi, meaning ‘place of the singing thrush’. The sound was named Milford Sound by an early whaler/ sealer, John Grono, who named it after Milford Haven in Wales. The sound can be viewed from planes and boats (even kayaks). Our Fly Cruise Fly tour takes in both plane and boat options.
